Buy the record twice.

Somewhere inside most funk and soul records of the late sixties there is a stretch where the arrangement gets out of the way. The horns stop, the vocal stops, and the drums carry alone for a few bars. Musicians called it the break and thought of it as furniture — a breath between sections, not the point of the record.

The crowd disagreed. Clive Campbell, a Jamaican-born teenager in the West Bronx known as DJ Kool Herc, watched people stand through entire songs waiting for fifteen seconds of drums, and then go up.

The break was the best part of the record and the record would not give you any more of it. That problem has exactly one honest solution.

You buy the record twice.

Two turntables, the same record on each, cued to the same place. Play the break on the first deck. While it runs, spin the second copy back and hold it. Just before the first one runs out of drums, cut across. Now the first deck is free, so you spin that one back — and you keep going, deck to deck, for as long as your arms hold out. Herc called it the merry-go-round, and the name is exactly right: it does not go anywhere, it comes back around.

Fifteen seconds became five minutes, and five minutes is enough room for something to happen. The dancers got a form long enough to enter, build, answer somebody and finish. They got a name, too — Herc named them after the thing they were waiting for. The microphone got a job. The DJ stopped playing records and started editing them in real time.

Everything else in this culture grew inside the space one repeated passage opened.

This is the first shirt in the Shadow Series, and the series has one rule: the chest carries a phrase and nothing else. No explanation, no logo, no date. Charcoal ink on a black body at roughly thirty percent contrast.

Across a room it reads as a black shirt. At conversational distance the words arrive.

That isn't a manufacturing compromise. It's the same logic the culture ran on — the information was always there, and it was only ever legible to people close enough to be paying attention.

A single stroke cuts through the phrase, and set along it, much smaller: INFINITE BREAK. The phrase says how many copies. It doesn't say why two is enough.

The back carries three lines under the BX mark. The left sleeve carries a code that opens the full history — how the technique worked, which records it was built on, and who never got paid for them. Inside the neck, where only the wearer sees it, the same code is repeated with one line of plain English, so the link survives the tag being cut off.
