Before there was an industry, there was a cassette and somebody willing to copy it.

A party on Friday was circulating across a borough by Monday, with no label, no pressing plant and no retail. On July 3, 1981 two crews battled at Harlem World for a thousand dollars, and somebody in the room hit record. That tape traveled hand to hand for seventeen years before anyone sold it.
