Before there was a DJ, there was a selector.
In Jamaican sound system culture the two jobs were separate. The deejay talked over the record. The selector chose it. And a sound system's reputation lived or died on what it could play that nobody else had — dubplates cut for one sound alone, records held back for the right night, entire clashes decided by a single tune nobody in the crowd had ever heard.
When those sound systems came north to the Bronx in the seventies, hip hop folded both jobs into one person. But it kept the Jamaican word for the half that mattered.
Play it first. That's the whole job. Anyone can play a record after it's already a hit.
