It is not a yard. A yard is a facility: fenced, staffed, lit, with maintenance sheds and workers on site. A layup has no perimeter, no gate, and nothing to cut.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThat distinction is the whole story of why the MTA lost for fifteen years. By the Transit Authority's own count, graffiti was being applied across \u003cstrong\u003e25 yards and 45 layup sites.\u003c\/strong\u003e The places that outnumbered the others almost two to one were the ones that couldn't be fenced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eWriters worked out early that in a layup they could hit far more cars, in far less time, with a lower chance of being caught, than they ever could on the street. That one realization moved the entire culture underground and onto the trains. Everything after it — whole cars, top-to-bottoms, the fifteen-year competition — follows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe work itself was the short part. As Martha Cooper described the full sequence: \u003cem\u003estealing the paint, designing the piece, preparing the layout, getting into the yard and all of that.\u003c\/em\u003e Only one of those five things happens at the train.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAnd the conditions were what they were. Six hundred volts on the third rail. No lighting. Trains that moved without warning.
