The subway's typeface during the years the trains were painted was not Helvetica — it was Akzidenz-Grotesk, \"Standard Medium,\" specified in the 1970 Transit Authority Graphics Standards Manual. Helvetica became the official subway face in 1989, the same year the MTA declared the system clean. Standard is the typeface of the painted trains. Jazz had the after-hours clubs. Breaking has the cypher. Graffiti had a bench on a subway platform in the Bronx, and for about fifteen years it was the most consequential piece of furniture in the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt sat at the back of the uptown platform at 149th Street and the Grand Concourse — the lower level, where the 2 and the 5 came together. Writers came from every borough to sit there and watch trains go by.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThat was the activity. That was the whole thing. And it worked because of where it was: one platform showed you the output of two lines and three boroughs, and an overpass let you see both directions at once.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThey called it benching. You went benching. And what happened there was judgment — writers admired and criticized the work as it rolled through, out loud, in front of the person who painted it. Blackbooks got signed and traded. Reputations got made. CRASH and DAZE met there in 1977.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt wasn't an audience. It was a panel. The art got as good as it did because of the fifteen years a group of teenagers spent at the end of a platform taking each other seriously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe bench didn't close. Its content stopped arriving. When the MTA declared the system clean in 1989 there was nothing left to bench, and the place that existed to watch work outlived the work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe station is still there. It just finished a $123 million renovation, and the coverage doesn't mention writers, or graffiti, or the bench. No plaque. No marker. Nothing. A Berlin museum reconstructed the bench as an installation in 2024. The Bronx got new elevators.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTwo notes on the shirt itself.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe chest says THE BENCH, not the station name, and that's deliberate. A station name is the MTA's language. \"The bench\" is what writers said, and it's the only word for the place that carries the practice — benching — inside it.
